Individual
Tutoring Services (ITS) provides one-on-one tutoring
in reading, writing, and mathematics for students in grades K through
12 and college. Our goal is to use one-on-one and small group tutoring as
an after school and over the summer
supplement to class-based instruction. The tutoring sessions
will complement and reinforce the curriculum taught in the classroom.
ITS connects its tutoring and instruction to the MDE Academic Standards. The greatest connection includes the sub-strands of: effective listening/communication, written and oral analysis, effective use of language, modeling and solving problems, formulating and communicating arguments and conclusions, and the use of mathematical models. During our tutoring sessions, our students use writing often, and we use that opportunity to integrate the appropriate grade level sub-strands of spelling, grammar, as well as handwriting.
ITS finds continuity across grade level very important. Our program uses the following instructional cycle – assess, plan, teach, assess. In keeping with our emphasis on writing throughout the grade levels, students are taught and tutored on using writing to identify steps to solving problems, clarifying their thinking, and explaining their reasoning. Students are helped to develop their writing skills in math and language arts through note taking, graphic organizers, strategy lists and open response questions. Through this process, students not only reinforce their understanding of different concepts and procedures, but they may also uncover new understandings or correct misunderstandings.
